Spirit of Sam Jones
This blog thing is a bit much for a guy spirit like me. Sorry, time has slipped by and now I need to catch up. When I was alive things went much slower. It might be a couple weeks before you received a letter, and phone calls were a rarity. Now, communication has a whole new level. Anyway, let’s see what is going on in Ocracoke.
They seem to have been working on a new cell phone tower or at least expanding the old one. I kinda think that is a good thing, although I don’t quite understand the need to always be in constant contact. I’ve been observing this thing people do called “texting” and I am quite fascinated; but as I look around it must be new since most of the ones doing it are young. In fact one of the many reasons I love Ocracoke is that it is off the beaten path of reality. But now seems like folks are really into phones, computers, ….. Wonder when the last time anyone wrote a letter? I still like it when I see someone reading a newspaper or a hard cover book. Call me old fashioned but I love the fact that the Castle still has a daily newspaper delivered in the morning and the guests here seem to enjoy it. Anyway looks like communication on the island will once again be updated and improved.
The road from Hatteras was washed out a few days ago. Seems like a big blow came through – not much rain, but wind. The road is now open and folks can come and go from the northern route. Interesting how much weather affects the island. Heavy wind or rain can shut those northern roads down pretty fast. Most of the folks that live here are used to it, and once they are here on the Island, the tourists seem to enjoy and make the most of the experience. It sure makes for some interesting times. The last day or two have been about as pretty as pretty can be. Carolina blue skies, a crisp feel in the air and hardly any mosquitoes. That is always a good thing. The mosquitoes used to be a lot worse in my day but one thing they still love is new arrivals.
Think I’ll take a scud around and let you know what I else I see going on.
