Spirit of Sam Jones
Just realized I missed talking about Halloween, always an Ocracoke special.
Ocracoke really enjoys this time of year. I think it’s one of the most enjoyable events on the Island……Well maybe that’s going a bit overboard! The kids have all kinds of activities, beginning with the annual ghost walk taking place a week before Halloween which seems to be in my honor. Howard’s Pub and Gaffer’s have parties and contests where the adults can step out in costumes that are unbelievable! Grown-ups don’t do store bought but let their creative juices flow, becoming kids all over again!
Of course the Castle also enjoys Halloween and love to do it up in style. The front room, parlor, and dining room are full of spiders in their webs, skeletons, pumpkins, candy and so forth. The kids trick or treat around the neighborhood which includes a stop at the Castle. Homemade cupcakes, that are almost to pretty to eat, apple juice and of course the candy for the sacks are all part of the festivities. A great time for all, including the guests who love to see the little ones in their costumes.
I myself went to the parties as a ghost (what else), and no one recognized me! I didn’t win any prizes either! Sometimes it really is tough being a real spirit!!!!!
