Ocracoke Community Shines in Time of Need

The other day an 81 year old male “Ococker”, (someone who was born and raised here) wandered off from his house in the early afternoon and was still missing many hours later. The people turned out in droves to help search for Maurice Balance, a much loved and admired member of our little community. By dark, the larger community responded with helicopters and dogs to assist in the search. What a wonderful sight to see, even though it was brought on by a possible tragedy. It had been warm in the afternoon but temperatures were falling which added to many reasons for concern. Folks were not to be discouraged. About 10pm, Maurice was found by his grandchildren. He was “just lost”, one source said, but the main relief – he was OK.

Once again the island pulls together and helps each other. I don’t mean just showing concern….I mean searching though brambles and marsh, looking for Maurice. It was cold, dark, and folks had other things going on, but they were there with flashlights – in groups and solo – out looking for a member of their community. The community also seems to be taking pride in that they found Maurice. As I overheard from a few folks, “That fancy helicopter nor special trained dogs could find him, but we did. Don’t get us wrong, we appreciate the helicopter and search dogs, but we needed all the help we could get.” It is good to report, the fellow is safe, seems to be fine, but I think he will stick a little closer to home these days. Even if it isn’t his idea, I think family and friends will be reminding him of this event for quite a while.

I was glad to retire back to the Castle and once again I was reminded, I love this island called Ocracoke. If you haven’t visited, please plan to do so. It is really something to experience.
