Scotch Bonnet on the windowsill
A very nice couple stayed a few days last week at the Castle. One morning at breakfast I overheard them talking to Jude who was cooking breakfast that morning. She is the weekend cook who joined the staff last fall. The couple was going shelling that morning and they were discussing good places to find shells. Jude also enjoys finding sea treasures and she mentioned a place she had been lucky in finding scotch bonnets, especially after a storm. The couple wasn’t familiar with this particular shell, so they looked it up on the Castle computer provided for guests in the parlor. Jude explained that this is the NC state shell and they are hard to find – unbroken. But as luck might have it, Ocracoke is one of the few places you can find them.
The next day the couple gave Jude two beautiful scotch bonnets – to keep at the Castle. What a sweet surprise. They had been lucky and wanted to share their “booty”. So now the Castle has two more treasures sitting on the windowsill in the kitchen.
