Twas a Happy Independence Day on Ocracoke Island

Twas a Happy Independence Day on Ocracoke Island

OK, I’ve been quiet for too long and I’m just about to bust with happiness and pride! What a wonderful July 4th on Ocracoke Island. I love Island tradition!

To get the down side out of the way, of course it was hot and crowded – it is July on Paradise, also known as Ocracoke Island. There were a couple of accidents and a small brush fire… But, on the up side – there is no-where that celebrates July 4th quite like Ocracoke.

The day started with a sand sculpture contest on the beach. Talk about some fine artistic talent and creativity by both the locals here and the visitors. Just love to see what folks come up with. The day begins with a flag raising and continues with sky divers, lemonade sales and probably the Best parade in America. (Then again I am prejudiced) Now I don’t mean the fanciest parade, there weren’t many bells and whistles - in fact there was somewhat of a lack of music this year during the parade – but the fun floats – the clever costumes – it just doesn’t get any better. I’m sure there will be photos posted on some of the island blogs and that face book “thingy”.

Everything about the parade screams – small town USA. Folks don’t go to the big stores and buy supplies – they use what they have and what they can find. And they are creative – amazingly creative! In the late afternoon, a very clever and talented fellow that lives here, Donald Davis, read from his new book at Books to Be Red. His stories just crack me up and he seems to have so much fun telling them. The night went on with a dance at the Community Square. Another really fun time. In fact wherever you went in the evening there was music which always is a major part of Island livin’! They didn’t do the Hokey Pokey, my favorite, but they do some kinda fun dance with a caller and of course fine local musicians. I was plum worn out when I got back to the Castle, where the house was full of some fine fun folks. I’m so happy to be able to be on Ocracoke again and let you hear some of my stories. Hope you are making your plans to come visit. It is mighty fine here! Come join us!

Sam - So happy to have you back. Sounds like the 4th was a great time on Ocracoke. Love reading what your up too and your memories of island life.
